The Oglethorpe men's tennis team closed their regular season Sunday morning with a 7-2 win over the Millsaps Majors at the Howell Courts. The win over Millsaps in a non-conference game meant that the Stormy Petrels finished the regular season 11-1 having won their final 10 matches.
The Petrels got off to an excellent start in doubles, winning two of their three matches. Freshman Vince Claussen and senior Zoe Raymond won the No. 2 match 8-1 while freshman Cameron Burkes and senior Michael Allen took down the No. 3 match 8-2.
Leading 2-1 headed into singles play, the Petrels secured victory on the day in relatively short order. Freshman Daniel Cohen won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 while Burkes took down the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-2. Raymond had a chance to clinch for the Petrels at No. 4, and he pulled out a relatively tight 6-3, 6-4 decision to give the Petrels their fifth point of the day.
After that, seniors Calvin Schneider and Walker Benson also earned victories. Schneider win 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. Benson engaged in a barn-burner of a match, with both sets finishing in tiebreaks and the match being decided by a first-to-10 tiebreak in lieu of a third set. Benson lost the first-set tiebreak 7-5, but won the second set extra frame 8-6. He then took the 10-point tiebreak 10-2.
Sunday also served as Senior Day for the program, which honored Allen, Benson, Raymond and Schneider for their contributions to Oglethorpe athletics prior to the match.
The Petrels hold the top seed in next weekend's SAA tournament, and will take on fourth-seeded Birmingham-Southern Saturday from the Adams Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
