The Oglethorpe women's tennis team fell 7-2 to the homestanding Birmingham-Southern Panthers Friday in Alabama. The defeat dropped the team to 3-6 on the season overall and 1-4 in SAA play.
The Panthers took all three doubles matches, putting the Stormy Petrels behind the eight-ball headed to singles competition. Sophomore Sydney Dattilo won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 while sophomore Alyssa Merletti took down her No. 4 match 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (8), winning the third-set super-tiebreaker 10-8. Senior Lisette Phillips proved a game opponent on the top line, winning a handful of games in a 6-2, 6-3 loss. However, Birmingham-Southern pulled away from the Petrels for the 7-2 win.
The same two teams will be back in action from Birmingham on Saturday, when they go against one another in a non-conference contest starting at 11 a.m.
