Women's lacrosse closes season with SAA semifinal loss to Centre

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team enjoyed their first-ever trip to the SAA semifinals Friday evening, but the third-seeded Stormy Petrels were up against a tough opponent in second-seeded Centre. The Colonels pulled away early in a 23-5 victory at Mason Field in Memphis, Tennessee. The Petrels season comes to a close with a 4-4 overall record.

Centre got out to an early 2-0 lead, but Oglethorpe tied it with consecutive goals at the 17:34 and 15:14 marks. Freshman attacker Ally Moir and junior attacker Samanda Cox provided the tallies to make it 2-2 midway through the opening half of play. However, Centre opened it up over the remainder of the half, scoring 11 of the final 12 goals of the period to take a 13-3 lead into the halftime break. The Colonels continued to push their advantage in the second half, outscoring the Petrels 10-2 in that period to eventually pull away to the 18-goal victory.

Moir led the way for the Petrels with a hat trick and three draw controls while senior goalie Jordan Chandler did all she could, tallying 23 saves in the losing effort.

The Colonels outshot Oglethorpe 51-11 overall and 46-8 on goal. The Petrels turned it over 21 times and were just 9-of-21 on clear attempts. Centre outdrew the Petrels 22-8.

Nevertheless, the Petrels finish the season with their best-ever finish in SAA play, pulling down a third-place finish in the league and tallying a 2-2 mark in league play.
