Late Berry goal forces men's soccer to settle for 1-1 draw

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team held a 1-0 lead until the final 12 seconds Saturday afternoon in Mount Berry against in-state rival Berry. However, a Viking goal with just 12 seconds remaining on the clock sent the game to an eventually scoreless extra-time session and meant the two teams had to settle for a draw in the battle for first place in the SAA. The result gave both teams a 3-0-1 record in conference play and left them tied atop the league standings.

After a scoreless first half, the Stormy Petrels immediately got on the scoreboard to start the second period. Sophomore midfielder Fernando Guevara tallied just 44 seconds after the start of the half, giving his team a 1-0 lead.

The two teams engaged in a tight match as the half went on, with Berry outshooting the Petrels 15-9 overall but Oglethorpe putting three of their shots on goal to the Vikings' two. The Petrels maintained their lead as the clock ticked down, but with just 12 seconds remaining, Berry scored the equalizer and tied the game at 1-1, seconding it to extra time.

The teams fired one shot apiece in the extra 20 minutes. Sophomore midfielder Ian Farquhar put a shot on target in the 106th minute, but it was turned aside by Berry goalkeeper Jose Palacios.

With the draw, the fate of SAA regular season title will be decided in the final week of the regular season. The Petrels will play Birmingham-Southern Friday and Millsaps Sunday, while Berry takes on the same two teams in the opposite order.
