Men's tennis knocks off Birmingham-Southern 5-4 to extend winning streak

The Oglethorpe men's tennis team pushed their winning streak to eight straight dual matches with a 5-4 win over Birmingham-Southern in a non-conference tilt Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 9-1 on the season overall.

The Petrels got off to a 2-1 lead in doubles, scoring an 8-3 win from seniors Walker Benson and Calvin Schneider at No. 2 and an 8-4 triumph from senior Zoe Raymond and freshman Cameron Burkes at No. 3.

Oglethorpe cliched the dual match in short order after that, with Schneider winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, freshman Daniel Cohen taking the No. 5 match 6-0, 6-2, and Burkes winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Those three matches gave the Petrels the requisite five points they needed, and that proved vital, as Birmingham-Southern won the top three matches, including a 7-6, 7-6 barnburner against Benson at the top line.

The Petrels have already assured themselves they'll be in the SAA Tournament, and they'll complete their regular season on April 17 and 18 with a pair of matches against Millsaps from the Howell Courts.
