Petrels open fall with 1-0 loss to No. 11 Washington and Lee

Box Score

ATLANTA – Several great chances late in the game, including one in the closing seconds, came up empty as the Oglethorpe men's soccer team played No. 11 Washington and Lee to a 1-0 decision Saturday night on the campus of Emory. The Generals scored the game's only goal in the 18th minute.

Oglethorpe produced several great looks to equalize late in the game, even dominating most of the possession in the final 30 minutes of play. Matthews Braga had one the Stormy Petrels' closest attempts with just under 15 minutes left, corralling a lobbed crossing pass along the left side just outside the penalty area. He took a couple of touches and blasted a shot at the near post, but it was saved by Washington and Lee goalkeeper Michael Nyc.

In the closing 30 seconds, Stephen Summerow took a similar shot from the left side, but Nyc was there for another save.

Washington and Lee led the shot count 14-8, but the Petrels led in shots on goal 7-4. Oglethorpe goalkeeper George Inzunza made three saves.

Up next, Oglethorpe has a quick turnaround as the Petrels play Sunday at 7 p.m. against crosstown rival Emory.
