Women’s lacrosse gears up for SAA tournament

ATLANTA - With the regular season wrapped up, Oglethorpe women's lacrosse heads into the Southern Athletic Association Tournament as the No. 3 seed, with strong players who have shown their skills throughout the season.

The SAA quarterfinals and semifinals will be held at Sewanee in Sewanee, Tennessee. The Stormy Petrels are scheduled to face Centre College in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 22, at 5 p.m. eastern time.

The Petrels have had a rocky history with Centre, falling to the Colonels in the first round of the SAA championship back in 2019. More recently, the Petrels fell to Centre 22-11 in a home game earlier this season. Centre is heading into the tournament as the No. 6 seed, with a 2-4 record in conference, and 8-8 overall this season.

Sewanee heads into the tournament as the No. 2 seed, giving them host status. The Petrels have also had a rough history with the Tigers, taking an 18-8 loss earlier this season. Similar to Centre, Sewanee was able to take down Oglethorpe 20-11 in the SAA quarterfinals back in 2017. Sewanee is currently 5-1 in conference play and 13-4 overall.

Oglethorpe is currently 3-3 in conference play and 11-4 overall.

This season, two Petrels received the SAA offensive player of the week recognition, with sophomores Kaitlynn Alford and Ally Moir taking the title back-to-back in early March. Alford has made over 30 goals this season, and Moir over 70. Additionally, Moir has 22 assists for the season.

If Oglethorpe wins the match against Centre, the Petrels will advance to play Sewanee on Sunday, April 24, at 1 p.m. The winners of the two semifinals will face each other on Sunday, May 1.
