ATLANTA – Sydney Dattilo advanced to the final while Dattilo and Lily Allyene advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Division III Women's South Regional Championship Saturday to highlight what has been a successful fall for Oglethorpe tennis.
Dattilo went 3-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles as she capped off the event runner-up in singles and a semifinalist with Allyene in doubles.
Dattilo made easy work of two of her three singles wins, only being pushed to three sets in the semifinal matchup against Mary Dabadie of Millsaps.
Allyene also had a great run in singles as she went past her Birmingham Southern opponent in the round of 16 before having to face teammate Alexis Salgueiro in the quarterfinals. Allyene won that matchup before falling in the semifinals to top-seeded Cici Hardin of Sewanee.
Alyssa Merletti had the toughest draw among the Stormy Petrels but managed a first-round win over Brook Patton of Piedmont, including a tiebreak win in the second set. Merletti then faced Hardin in the quarterfinals and lost 6-3, 6-3.
Doubles
The Oglethorpe doubles pair of Dattilo and Allyene started the event with two easy wins over Piedmont and Birmingham Southern in the round of 16 and quarterfinals before ultimately falling short to North Carolina Wesleyan's Andrea Elaez Miranda and Bethan Fothergill. Miranda and Fothergill were the bracket's top seed, yet Dattilo and Allyene pushed the No. 1 duo to a tiebreak, coming up short 7-3 in the breaker.
Merletti and Maddie Nolen also posted a big win in the round of 16 but fell in the quarterfinals.
