Men’s soccer SAA championship preview

ATLANTA – No. 1 seeded Oglethorpe is set to host the semifinals and final of the Southern Athletic Association men's soccer tournament on Friday, Nov. 3, and Sunday, Nov. 5.

Tournament Schedule

  • Friday, Nov. 3: Oglethorpe will host a neutral game between second-seeded Rhodes and third-seeded Centre at 5 p.m. The Petrels will face fourth-seeded Sewanee at approximately 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 5: The two winners will face off at 1 p.m. for the 2023 SAA postseason title.

This Season

  • Oglethorpe earned home field advantage by way of winning the regular season title for the sixth time in the last eight years.
  • Oglethorpe set the school record for team shutouts and freshman goalkeeper Nicolas Mejia set the school record for individual shutouts, both with 11 clean sheets this season.
  • Oglethorpe's record is 12-2-2 (6-1 SAA).
  • Oglethorpe's lone conference loss came from a 2-1 loss at Rhodes in mid-October.
  • Oglethorpe recorded a 2-2 draw against nationally ranked No. 3 Emory and a 1-0 win against No. 11 Washington & Lee.
  • Junior Ben Alram was named conference offensive player of the year.
  • Head Coach Jon Akin was named conference coach of the year for the ninth time.
  • All-SAA first team honorees: Ben Alram, Daniel Amah, Adrian Levy, and JR Cozine.
  • All-SAA second team honorees: Luke Ferrari, Jake Locklear, and Cristian Medina.
  • All-SAA honorable mentions: Dylan Bapst, Carlos Cavallaro, Javier Martinez, Nicolas Mejia, Nicolas Sciarra.

Additional Notes

  • Oglethorpe has won 10 conference titles: seven in the regular season and three in the postseason.
  • Oglethorpe's last postseason conference title was in 2017. This same year, the Petrels advanced as far as the round of 32 at the NCAA Division III tournament.
  • The Petrels earned runner-up in 2021, when Oglethorpe last hosted the tournament.
  • The title winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
