ATLANTA—Oglethorpe freshman Kellen Simmons has been named to the Southern Athletic Association All-Conference second team, announced the league office Monday afternoon. Simmons led the Stormy Petrels as the team's exclusive No. 1 singles player, posting seven singles wins and 12 doubles wins.
Simmons' success played a key part in Oglethorpe advancing to the SAA tournament championship match after upsetting Rhodes in the semifinals.
Simmons came through in the clutch in that Rhodes semifinal match, avenging a regular-season loss to Rhodes' top player, Oliver Bonovich, with a three-setter that helped Oglethorpe advance. It marked his ninth time going past two sets this season.
In doubles action, Simmons partnered with Figge Pernfors for a 12-2 record, exclusively at the No. 2 spot. The pair led the team in doubles wins together, and they also helped Oglethorpe advance past Rhodes last weekend with their doubles win.
Simmons, a freshman, posted one of his biggest wins of the year in the team's trip to Florida when he defeated No. 39 Skidmore's No. 1 singles player in a third set super tiebreaker.
