ATLANTA—Oglethorpe graduate student Ashton Deriso turned in an outstanding performance Friday night in the cross country opener and for his efforts has been named Southern Athletic Association athlete of the week.
This marked Deriso's fourth time winning such honor in his career.
Deriso broke the Oglethorpe cross country 5k record with a 14:50.59 effort at Jacksonville State's Foothills Invitational. He finished third to a pair of NCAA Division I Auburn harriers in a field dominated by Division I and Division II competition.
Deriso's effort led Oglethorpe to a seventh-place team finish.
The Stormy Petrels compete next at the NCAA Division III Preview Saturday, Sept. 20, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It will be the first of three more meets on the schedule prior to the SAA Championships.
