Box Score The Oglethorpe University men's basketball team topped Colorado
College on Pinholster Court on Sunday afternoon, 76-62. The Petrels
closed the first half on a 26-7 run to turn a tie game into a 19
point halftime lead from which Oglethorpe would never look back.
The double-digit win is only the Petrels thrid by double-figures
among 11 victories on the season and gave Coach Ponder the luxury
of substituting freely with the game being finished by hard-working
subs Branden Jovaag, Steven Davis, Price Hamilton, Chandler Rierson
and Andrew Steioff. The Petrels second unit of Tyler Cerone, Erik
Strong, Alec Pitts, Christian Molinet and Eddie Buckley also played
quality minutes throughout the game to provide Oglethorpe with a
much-needed easy victory.
The 26-7 run to close the half was pretty much the nail in the
Tigers' coffin though Colorado College did manage to trim the
Petrel lead down to 11 on two occasions in the second stanza.
Oglethorpe responded, however, and pushed their lead all the way up
to 22 points in the final 8 minutes of the game to allow the
reserves who have been fighting hard in practice a chance to close
out the contest.
Fifteen different Petrels appeared in the contest with only one
player, Wade Weldon, playing more than 30 minutes of clock time.
Joe Kennedy continued to heat up for the Petrels by scoring 14
points on 5 of 8 shooting to go along with 5 boards and 3 assists.
Alex Richey also scored 14 for Oglethorpe with 3 boards and three
dimes while Weldon totaled 13 points on the afternoon. David
Allison posted 12 points and two steals and Todd Ward scored 8
points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
The Petrels shot a lights-out 52% from the field (31-60) and
also connected on 10 of 20 three-balls to earn the easy victory.
The Petrel defense, meanwhile, held the Tigers to 38% (23-61) to
earn the conference win.
With the result Oglethorpe is now 11-6 on the season and 6-3 in
SCAC play, sitting in second place of the SCAC East standings. The
Petrels hit the road again to face Hendrix College in Conway,
Arkansas this coming Friday at 8:00 p.m.
