The Oglethorpe baseball team rallied for five runs in the ninth
inning on Monday for an exciting 11-10 victory. Pinch hitter Joseph
Parillo hit a walk-off grand slam to win it in what was the first
time he had seen the field all year for the Petrels.
The Petrels trailed Washington & Lee 10-6 entering the ninth
after blowing a 6-4 lead. The bottom half of the inning
started well for the Petrels, however, as first baseman Andy Farrey
singled to lead off the inning. Catcher Adam Brazenas followed up
with another single, and after second baseman Nick Manai grounded
into a fielder's choice to erase Brazenas, shortstop Jonathan
McWhorter doubled home Farrey to make it 10-7. Pinch hitter Stephen
Archer then was hit by a pitch, bringing the potential winning run
to the plate in the form of Parillo.
Before giving up five runs in the top of the ninth, the Petrels
had already come from behind to get the lead. Down 4-2 in the
fifth, they scored two runs in each of the next two innings to take
the 6-4 lead.
The game-tying runs in the fifth came on a two-run, Andy Farrey
home run down the right-field line.
The Petrels took the lead in the sixth on an RBI double by
centerfielder Brendan Pilger, then expanded it on a J.J. Rizzo
sacrifice fly.
Aside from Parillo, other standout performers on the day for the
Petrels included Farrey, who went 4-5 with the homer, a double, two
RBIs and three runs scored.
Matthew Cornwell got the win in relief for the Petrels. While
not on the hook for the potential loss, he did give up three runs
in the ninth inning, but moves to 2-0 on the year with the win
after the ninth-inning comeback.
The Petrels improve to 6-1 on the year with the win. That record
marks the best start the Petrels have had in modern history,
passing the previous mark of 5-1. They will next be in action on
Tuesday afternoon against LaGrange. First pitch will be thrown at
approximately 3 p.m. at Anderson Field.
