Petrels Blow Big Lead, Lose Late at Colorado

Box Score

The men's basketball team lost to Colorado College in Colorado Springs on Friday night, 64-59. The Petrels led by 16 at halftime and held a 12 point edge with 8:32 to play before the wheels came off and the Tigers surged to victory.

The Tigers held a 12-10 advantage six minutes into the contest before Oglethorpe exploded for a 21-4 run that was bookended by Branden Jovaag baskets to open up a 31-16 lead. Todd Ward drilled a three-pointer with only one minute remaining in the first half to give Oglethorpe it's largest lead and send Coach Ponder's squad into the locker room with a 38-22 cushion.

The Petrels held strong in the second stanza, stretching the advantage to 17 points at one juncture and, following an Alec Pitts steal and Christian Molinet jumper, were in front 51-39 with 8:32 to play. That's went things went south for Oglethorpe as the next 4:30 of clock time was disastrous. The Tigers ripped off 14 consecutive points as the Petrels went empty on six straight possessions that featured four turnovers and two missed field goals. When the dust had finally settled Oglethorpe trailed Colorado 53-51 with 4:04 to play.

The Petrels would manage to come back and tie the game before the SCAC's leading scorer Nick Rose would score seven straight points in 90 seconds to push the Tigers over the top. The Petrels outrebounded the Tigers 33-28 but were done in by committing six of their 14 turnovers in the game's final seven minutes.

Ward led Oglethorpe on 10 of 16 shooting for 24 points and 6 rebounds while Pitts contributed 16 points. Joe Kennedy scored 8, grabbed 5 rebounds and forced three steals in the loss.

The Petrels are now 9-8 (5-3) on the season and will travel to Sherman, Texas to face Austin on Sunday afternoon.
