Men Stay Hot, Top Piedmont

Box Score

The men's basketball team topped Piedmont College on Pinholster Court on Wednesday evening, 76-62. After drilling 47% of their three's in a Sunday win over LaGrange, the Petrels bettered that figure by nailing 48% from downtown against the Lions en route to the double-digit win.

Piedmont opened the game with a missed three-pointer and, after hauling in the rebound, Sam Purdy found Branden Jovaag open on the other end for a trey that Jovaag swished through the net to give Oglethorpe a 3-0 lead. That up-and-down exchange was a perfect snapshot of the night inside the Dorough Field House as the Petrels went on to make 11-of-23 shots from beyond the arc while the Lions struggled, hitting only 4-of-22 (18%). Piedmont held only one lead in the contest early on and it lasted for only 15 seconds as Oglethorpe kept the Lions at bay throughout the night.

It looked as though the Petrels might land a knockout punch in the first half when they stretched the lead to 11 at the 4:04 mark following another Jovaag three-pointer. The Lions rallied, however, to cut the deficit to 4 before Alec Pitts delighted the crowd by drilling a contested three just before the half expired to push the margin back to 7.

As if on script, the second stanza began with a miss from downtown by the Panthers Dylan Delaney only to be followed by a three-point make on the other by the Petrels, this one also coming courtesy of Pitts. Before long Oglethorpe held a double-digit advantage that Piedmont simply could not overcome. After briefly cutting the margin to 8 with 14:35 to play, Oglethorpe quickly pushed the lead back to 15 after a flurry that began with consecutive baskets from Christian Molinet and concluded with 4 straight from sophomore Tyler Courson. The Lions would not recover to threaten from that point forward as the Petrels cruised to victory.

After a stellar weekend performance Sam Purdy continued to shine for Oglethorpe, making 6-of-9 shots including four three-pointers for a game-high total of 16 points. He was joined in double-figures by three teammates: Pitts (12 points, 3 steals), Jovaag (12 points) and Steioff (11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks). Molinet added a fine all-around game with 9 points, 6 assists and two steals.

The Petrels are back at .500 for the season at 3-3 and will face-off with conference rival Birmingham-Southern on Pinholster Court this Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
