Box Score The Oglethorpe baseball team jumped out to a big lead Sunday afternoon, then used that to their advantage as they absorbed a couple of blows, but still had enough to win comfortably, 10-6.
The Petrels had a 6-1 lead after two innings and a 10-1 lead after five. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Petrels took the lead on an Andy Farrey two-run single. They were his first two RBIs of the year. Then in the second, Oglethorpe loaded the bases with two singles and a sacrifice bunt that the visiting Generals misplayed into an error. Farrey came up again and ripped a bases-clearing double down the right-field line, giving the Petrels a four-run lead and giving him his first five RBIs of the year in a two-inning span. Catcher Joe Parillo continued the inning by driving Farrey home with a single to give the Petrels a 6-1 lead. Then in the fifth, second baseman Jake Spear and center fielder Jeff Pope both singled, setting up the big inning. Shortstop Matt Cornwell followed with an RBI single, and left fielder Brendan Pilger came up with the big blow: a three-run homer that gave the Petrels a nine-run lead.
This gave starting pitcher Mark Hoban plenty of room to work with. He gave up four runs, three of them in the seventh, but still had a six-run lead at the end of his day. He eventually got the win, his first of the year. Over his six-plus innings of work, he allowed nine hits, walked one and struck out eight.
The Petrels gave up additional runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but still finished the game without the potential tying run ever coming to the plate. The two teams finished even on hits with 15 apiece.
Farry had what appeared to be a breakout game for his season, going 3-for-5 with a double, five RBIs and a run scored. Pilger was 1-for-5, but the one hit was the three-run homer that put the game out of reach.
With the win, the Petrels improve to 3-3 on the year. They will next be in action Tuesday, when Huntingdon comes to Anderson Field for the first doubleheader of the season. The first game will start at approximately 3 p.m., and the second game will start approximately 30 minutes after the end of the first one.
