Box Score The men's lacrosse team played it's first ever regular season game today at Reinhardt and earned a hard fought 9-6 victory in the Petrels inaugural lacrosse clash. Included beneath the recap is a list of the day's "firsts" for the squad.
The two teams spent much of the first quarter getting settled into the contest before the Golden Eagles cracked the scoreboard first with a strike at the 3:00 minute mark. The Petrels quickly responded, however, as Austin Treadwell fed Michael Kasmarik for the first goal in school history with 1:39 to play in the first.
The Petrels took the lead for good early in the second quarter as Kasmarik found a streaking Arness Holsey to jump on top of the Golden Eagles. Kasmarik would add a second goal just before halftime to give the Petrels a 3-1 edge at the break.
Oglethorpe began to open up a lead in the third quarter with Holsey notching three of his game-high six goals in the session. The Petrels eventually created a five goal advantage at 8-3 early in the fourth before the Golden Eagles tallied three straight to tighten things up at 8-6.
As Reinhardt pressed to make it a one goal game in the final three minutes the Petrels showed poise on defense and, with 1:33 to play, forced a turnover that led to Holsey putting the finishing touches on the win with a breakaway goal.
The Petrels are now 1-0 on the season and will face Shorter College on the road on March 2 at 7:00 p.m. The team's home opener is slated for March 16 versus Carthage.
