Box Score 2 The Oglethorpe baseball team got a split in their Saturday doubleheader at DePauw, advancing themselves to 4-3 in SCAC play. The Petrels got the bats out in Game 1 and hammered the Tigers 17-7, then were shut down by DePauw pitching in a 9-0 Game 2 loss.
The Petrels jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1, using four DePauw errors to go along with four hits of their own. The big blow was a Jake Spear two-run single, which wound up scoring three when DePauw extended the play with an error.
The Petrels then scored four more runs in the second on three more hits and two more DePauw errors, and added an additional run in the third to give themselves an 11-0 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers attempted to pull themselves back into the game with four runs of their own. But the Petrels put it away in the fourth, scoring six more runs. Big blows included a two-run double by Brendan Pilger and a two-run single by Adam Brazenas. The Pilger double was his 10th of the season and 38th of his career, tying him with Dan Torrenti for the modern school record for most career doubles.
Overall, the Petrels outhit the Tigers 13-9 over the course of the game. DePauw committed eight errors.
Pilger went 1-for-2 with the double, two walks, a stolen base, two RBIs and four runs scored. Matt Cornwell was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored. Brazenas went 2-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Game 2 did not go as well for the Petrels, as they were only able to muster two hits and committed five errors of their own. DePauw starter Elliott Ross threw a shutout, and had a perfect game going through 7 2/3 innings. Brazenas broke it up with a two-out single in the eighth.
The split moves the Petrels to 14-11 on the year, 4-3 in SCAC play. They remain in third place in the SCAC East Division, which is essentially second place with Birmingham-Southern ineligible for the championship. Oglethorpe will complete the three-game series with DePauw at noon on Sunday.
