Petrels Shut Out By Divison I Georgia State, 5-0

Box Score

The Oglethorpe baseball team was shut down by Georgia State pitching Tuesday evening, losing to their crosstown Division I competitors, 5-0.

The Petrels were only able to scratch out three hits against the home-standing Panthers. Georgia State scored all five of their runs in the first three innings and cruised from there. They used nine pitchers to attain their three-hit shutout, one for each inning.

Starter Mark Hoban suffered the loss for the Petrels, dropping him to 3-4 on the year. He threw five innings and allowed five runs on seven hits, walking none and striking out four. Sam Briend threw well in relief of Hoban, allowing no runs on three hits over three innings of work. He walked one and struck out four.

It was the Petrels' second visit to Panthersville in three years. They lost, 14-7, on their previous visit in 2009.

The loss drops the Petrels to 18-21 on the year. There are three games remaining in the season, all against Berry. The Petrels will travel to Mount Berry, Ga., on Friday, where they will take on the Vikings at 6 p.m. Berry will make a return trip to Atlanta on Saturday, where they will play a doubleheader at Anderson Field. The Petrels will need to win two-of-three in the series to become the first Oglethorpe baseball team since 1997 to finish with 20 wins.
