Men Rally But Lose Late at Colorado

Box Score

Trailing for most of the game, the men's basketball team found themselves down by 20 points with barely 10 minutes left in the second half at Colorado College on Sunday afternoon. The Petrels rallied all the way within one and had a shot at the lead go awry before losing 61-58.

The Petrels held just two brief leads in this one - after freshman Alex Davis scored the game's first bucket followed by a hoop from senior Andrew Steioff - at 2-0 and 4-3, respectively. The Tigers took the lead for good on a three-ball with 14:27 to play in the half and Oglethorpe played catch-up the rest of the afternoon. Both teams struggled to shoot the ball at the outset and they combined to make just 14-of-52 (27%) in the first 20 minutes. The Tigers led 23-17 at the break.

The Tigers immediately pressed the lead into double-digits at the start of the second half, and after back-to-back treys at the 14:27 mark, suddenly held a dominating 45-25 advantage. The Petrels methodically clawed back though with a 28-10 surge that was capped by an Alec Pitts three to make the score 55-53 with exactly two minutes remaining in the contest.

Down 4 with just under a minute left, Pitts drew a foul on a three-point attempt and drilled each free throw to make it 59-58 with 45 ticks showing on the clock. The Petrels clamped down and got a defensive stop with 15 seconds remaining but Pitts' shot at a game-winner with 2 seconds showing went begging off the rim. Oglethorpe fouled with one second left and the Tigers provided the final margin at the charity stripe.

Oglethorpe shot an impressive 16-of-26 (61%) to ignite the second half comeback that fell just short. Steioff led three Petrels in double-figures with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Pitts and freshman Jordan Kinney added 14 points apiece.

The Petrels are now 9-11 (4-7) on the season and will face Rhodes College in Memphis this coming Friday night.
