Dominant First Half Guides Lynx Past Petrels

Box Score

The men's basketball team was topped by Rhodes College on Pinholster Court on Friday night, 76-55. The Lynx made a remarkable 17-of-19 (90%) first half shots and used a 20-0 run to open up a 27 point halftime lead to remove any doubt early on in this contest.

The night got off to a bad start when league-MVP front-runner Andrew Galow drilled three-pointers on Rhodes' first two possessions on his way to scoring 13 of the Lynx first 14 points. Oglethorpe regrouped to make the score 15-14 with 11:47 to play in the half before the wheels fell off. That's when Rhodes used a 20-0 spurt that morphed into a 33-7 outscoring of Oglethorpe in the final 11 minutes of the half. When the dust had finally settled the score was 48-21 at the break and the game was all but over.

The Petrels showed moxie in the second half, however, and went on a spirited run of their own to try and climb back into the game. Down by their largest margin at 53-25, the Petrels pieced together an 11-0 spurt of their own to trim the lead down to 17. Oglethorpe continued to hound the Lynx and, after Rhodes had only scored 6 points in the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Petrels had cut the lead to 15. But the scrambling effort to claw their way back took a physical toll on the Petrels and Rhodes pulled back away down the stretch.

Oglethorpe made just 22-of-64 shots (34.4%) on the night and had only one player crack double-digits (Alec Pitts - 11 points). After the ridiculous first half shooting the ball, the Lynx "cooled" to just 48% in the second half and finished the game 29-of-44 from the field (66%).

Despite the loss Oglethorpe will have a chance to bounce back less than 48 hours later when they face Millsaps College at 3:00 p.m. this Sunday. At 5-8 (0-4) on the season, the Petrels will need to put together a full 40 minutes to start marching back to the .500 mark and pick up their first conference win.
