Box Score The Oglethorpe men's basketball team routed Hendrix Friday night at Dorough Field House, outscoring them by 21 points in the second half and cruising home for an 86-55 win.
The win improves the Petrels to 10-3 on the season, matching the program's best record after 13 games since joining NCAA Division III in 1991. The 1993-94 SCAC championship team was the other Oglethorpe men's basketball squad to start 10-3 in the modern era. Oglethorpe also now sits at 2-0 in SAA play.
The game was tied 8-8 five minutes in, but the Petrels went on a 21-6 run over the next 10 minutes to grab a 15-point lead. Hendrix went on a 7-2 run of their own to end the half and the Petrels led by 10 points, 31-21, at the break.
However, the Petrels ran the visiting Warriors off the floor in the second half. Over the first four minutes of the half, they went on a 16-7 run to extend their lead to 19 points. Hendrix stuck around for awhile, cutting the lead back to 12 with 12:37 remaining, 49-37. That was as close as they would get, though.
Over the latter portion of the second half, the Petrels embarked on a 17-2 run that buried the Warriors, giving Oglethorpe an 85-50 lead, their largest of the game, with 1:45 remaining. The Petrels easily closed out the victory from there.
The Petrels shot 50 percent to Hendrix's 38 and shot 36 percent from beyond-the-arc to Hendrix's 27. They committed just 10 turnovers to the visiting side's 25. They outscored Hendrix 46-28 in the paint, 27-4 off turnovers, 14-7 in second-chance points, 17-8 on the fast break, and 38-4 off the bench.
Senior guard Christian Molinet filled up the stat sheet again, scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, passing out six assists, and swiping six steals. Junior forward Tyler Courson had an excellent game off the bench, chipping in 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, five rebounds, and four steals.
The Petrels will next be in action Sunday afternoon, when Rhodes ventures into Dorough Field House. The game will tip-off at approximately 3 p.m., or 30 minutes after the women's game concludes.
