Women's Soccer Loses 5-3 Shootout at Hendrix

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team lost to Hendrix Sunday afternoon in Conway, Ark., in a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair that ended in Hendrix's favor, 5-3.

The Petrels fell behind in the fifth minute, but came right back to tie the game, 1-1, in the 11th minute. Sophomore midfielder Claire Stauber buried a shot in the back of the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. 

After Hendrix scored twice more to go ahead 3-1, Oglethorpe senior defender Katie Muller got the team back to within one in the 45th minute, just 37 seconds before halftime, with her first goal of the season. Then, the Petrels tied the game in the 62nd minute, as sophomore forward Laura Betancourt bagged her second goal of the season off an assist from sophomore midfielder Emily Silva. The score was 3-3 with 28 minutes left in the game.

However, Hendrix took the lead back in the 74th minute, then put the game away with another goal in the 78th minute.

The Warriors outshot the Petrels 16-8 over the course of the game, including 11-5 in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Evans stopped four shots on the day.

The loss drops the Petrels to 5-6-1 on the season, 0-3 in SAA play. They will return home for the remainder of their schedule starting on Saturday, when they take on SAA rival Centre on Salamone Field at 2 p.m.
