Men's Basketball Goes 2-0 in Equinox Classic, Defeats Haverford

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team wrapped up a highly successful Equinox Classic with a victory over co-host Haverford on their home floor Saturday afternoon in Haverford, Pa. The Stormy Petrels prevailed 63-57.

Oglethorpe was the only squad to go 2-0 in the four-team, two-day classic, and they did it winning both games on their opponent's home floor. They beat Swarthmore in overtime Friday night, 88-82.

Senior guard Tyler Courson and sophomore forward Victor Rohlfs were both named to the All-Classic Team for their work over the course of the weekend. Courson again led the team in scoring Saturday night, pouring in 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He shot 3-for-5 from beyond-the-arc and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. He also pulled down 10 rebounds, giving him a double-double. This came on the heels of a 26-point outburst in Friday night's victory over Swarthmore. Rohlfs contributed 11 points and seven rebounds after tallying 21 points Friday night.

The Petrels trailed for much of the second half Saturday after going into the locker room tied, 28-28. They trailed by as many as seven in the period, the low point coming with 14:43 remaining, but slowly chipped away at the lead and tied the game, 48-48, on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Drew Patrick. After briefly falling back behind, the Petrels would not trail again after Courson buried back-to-back shots to give the team a 53-52 edge with 4:38 remaining. The home-standing Fords again fought back to tie the game, 54-54, with 2:36 left, but the Petrels took the lead back with a pair of Rohlf free throws, and Courson hit what proved to be the back-breaking three-pointer with 1:15 left, putting Oglethorpe up by five, 59-54. From there, the Petrels made their free throws to close the game out.

This followed an even first half in which neither team led by more than five points. That five-point lead belonged to the Petrels, as they led the Fords 16-11 with 8:18 remaining in the half. Oglethorpe trailed only three times in the period, and never by more than two points. They built their lead back up to four, 27-23, when junior guard Alex Davis converted a layup with 2:32 remaining, but Haverford fought back to tie the score at the break.

In addition to Courson and Rohlfs, Patrick had an excellent game for the Petrels. He scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. In addition, he went 3-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc.

The Fords actually outshot the Petrels overall, 38.9 percent to 36.4. The difference came from long distance, however, as Oglethorpe shot 36 percent from beyond the arc while Haverford shot just 22.2 percent. The Petrels also outrebounded Haverford, 39-34.

Haverford and Ithaca both finished the Equinox Classic 1-1, while Swarthmore went 0-2. Ithaca fell to Haverford Friday night, but beat Swarthmore Saturday. Both games Friday night were held on Swarthmore's home floor, while both Saturday games were played at Haverford.

This marks the second time the Petrels have competed in the Equinox Classic. They are now 4-0 at the early season event, having gone 2-0 against the same two teams at the 2008 Equinox Classic.

The 2-0 Petrels will play one more road game before returning to Dorough Field House for their home opener next weekend. They'll travel to Asheville, N.C., to take on Warren Wilson Thursday at 7 p.m. Then, they'll return to Atlanta for back-to-back home games. The aforementioned home-opener will be next Saturday against Toccoa Falls, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. Then, they'll welcome Covenant in to Dorough Field House next Tuesday.
