Box Score The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team lost a 13-11 decision to Rhodes on Sunday at the new Oglethorpe Track and Field. The loss drops the Petrels to 2-10 on the season, 0-4 in SAA play.
The game was close the whole way, with Rhodes leading the entire game but Oglethorpe never letting the game get away from them. Rhodes started by taking an early 3-0 lead. However, the Petrels got three goals of their own in the first quarter, two from junior Arness Holsey and one from sophomore Ben Caoili and trailed just 5-3 entering the second quarter.
In the second stanza, junior Dylan Stanley cut the Lynx lead to one with a goal at the 10:47 mark. Then, after Rhodes scored again, Holsey netted his third goal of the half to pull the Petrels to within one again with 3:02 remaining in the half. Unfortunately, Rhodes scored twice more in the final minute of the half, they took an 8-5 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Petrels fell behind by five goals after two quick strikes from the Rhodes attack force, but Holsey and Stanley followed with back-to-back goals to send the game to the fourth quarter with a 10-7 scoreline. Stanley's goal came off a man-up opportunity, the Petrels' lone goal in that situation all day.
However, despite an early fourth-quarter goal from Maseo Brown, Rhodes built another five-goal lead on Oglethorpe, 13-8, with 8:32 remaining. The Petrels began a furious comeback, with two more goals from Holsey and another from Brown, and pulled to within two goals, 13-11, with 1:26 remaining, but they couldn't get any closer and wound up suffering the two-goal loss.
The big difference in the game statistically was the fact that Rhodes converted on 4-of-8 extra-man opportunities, while Oglethorpe scored on 1-of-3. The Petrels committed eight penalties for six total penalty minutes, while Rhodes committed four for just 2:30.
Holsey bagged a season-high six goals on the afternoon, doing so on 14 shots. Brown and Stanley finished with two goals each.
On his Senior Day, defender Nick Pizzo scooped up six ground balls and caused two turnovers, doing all he could to give the Petrels a chance to win.
Though Oglthorpe's home season is over, they will be on the road over the next two weekends to complete the regular season. They'll take on Centre at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
