Box Score The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team fell at Centre Saturday evening in Danville, Ky., losing to the home-standing Colonels, 26-6.
The Petrels fell behind 11-0 in the first quarter and never really got back into the game. They found themselves behind 19-1 at the end of the first half. The lone Petrel goal in the first half came off the stick of junior attackman Arness Holsey with 3:10 remaining until halftime.
The Petrels played better in the second half, but it was too late to salvage the game. Centre outscored Oglethorpe 4-1 in the third quarter, the lone Petrel goal coming from freshman defender John Shramek, the first goal of his career.
In the fourth quarter, the Petrels outscored the Colonels 4-3. Oglethorpe got three straight goals to start the period, as sophomore attackman Jake Godwin, sophomore midfielder Ben Caoili and junior attackman Dylan Stanley netted back-to-back-to-back goals for the Stormy Petrels. Stanley also picked up an assist on Godwin's goal. Then Holsey found the back of the net again with 10:35 remaining in the game, completing the scoring for the Petrels.
Centre outshot Oglethorpe 68-18, including 43-12 on goal. The Colonels picked up 77 ground balls to the Stormy Petrels' 26, and successfully cleared the ball out of their own zone 18-of-19 times to Oglethorpe's 13-of-25.
Holsey wound up with two goals on eight shots, while Stanley, Shramek, Godwin and Caoili tallied a goal apiece. Caoili won 16-of-36 faceoffs and scooped five ground balls on the night.
Junior starting goalkeeper Cooper O'Brien stopped 11 of 28 shots on goal, while freshman backup Jon Praet stopped 6-of-15.
The loss drops the Petrels to 2-11 on the season, 0-5 in SAA conference play. They will next be in action on Friday, when they travel to Jackson, Miss., to take on Millsaps at 4 p.m. Eastern.
