Men's Soccer Suffers Tough Loss to Start Season, Drops Late Decision to Mississippi College, 2-1

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team suffered a tough loss to begin the 2013 campaign Saturday afternoon, losing to Mississippi College, 2-1, in the annual Sonny Carter Invitational on the campus of Emory University.

Competing in the tournament which pits Oglethorpe and Emory against two out-of-town teams, the Petrels jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Mississippi College. Defender Nikos Papanikolopoulos turned in a shot at the 36-minute mark, giving the Petrels a 1-0 lead.

However, the Choctaws would equalize in the 60th minute, then take the lead in the 78th. It was a lead they would not relinquish.

The Choctaws outshot the Stormy Petrels 18-6, including 7-2 on goal. They took five corners to Oglethorpe's three, and the Petrels outfouled them, 14-8.

Papanikolopoulos scored on his only shot of the game. Ellis Curry contributed two shots, and Reese Jackson had the team's other shot on goal. Newcomer goalkeeper Vaughn Moore made five saves on the afternoon.

The Petrels will look to bounce back Sunday afternoon when they take on Marian in their second and final game of this Sonny Carter Invitational. Kickoff is scheduled for noon from Emory University.
