Men's Soccer Game Against Marian Cancelled Due to Continued Lightning

The Oglethorpe men's soccer game against Marian Sunday afternoon was cancelled 38 minutes into the first half due to continued lightning in the area of Emory University's campus. The game was being played there is part of the Sonny Carter Invitational.

The Petrels led 1-0 at the time the game was stopped, but none of those statistics will count, and the game is a no contest. The teams waited for around two hours for the storm to clear, but it lingered and stopped the game from ever continuing.

Oglethorpe looked good up until the time of the stoppage. Their goal came off the foot of senior midfielder Sean King in the 21st minute, as he took a long through-ball down the middle of the field from senior defender Justin Graves and beat the Marian goalkeeper to the left side. As the half unfolded, the Petrels enjoyed the lion's share of possession and outshot Marian, 8-3. Unfortunately, none of those stats will count.

The Petrels are assured of third place in the Sonny Carter Invitational, losing to Mississippi College on Saturday by a smaller margin than Marian lost to Emory. King and freshman midfielder Gustavo Martinez were named to the all-tournament team.

The Petrels exit the weekend at 0-1 on the season. They hit the road next weekend, travelling to Greensboro, N.C., to take on Guilford at 7 p.m. on Friday, then on to Danville, Va., for a game against Averett Sun. at 1 p.m.
