Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to
Piedmont in its first road game of the season Thursday night in
Demorest, Ga.
The team found itself down 1-0 just 13 seconds into the match,
as the homestanding Lions fashioned a breakaway off the opening
kick. The Petrels did not concede another goal for the remainder of
the first half and also outshot the Lions over the course of the
stanza, 10-8.
However, the precarious position the first-minute goal had put
them in came home to roost in the 48th minute when Piedmont scored
again and took complete control of the game. The Lions outshot the
Petrels 7-3 in the second half and 15-13 for the game, putting nine
shots on goal to Oglethorpe's three.
Oglethorpe sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Craig did an
excellent job of keeping the Petrels in the game, though, as she
stopped seven Piedmont shots on goal. In the end, the Petrels just
did not get much of an attack going in the second half.
The now 2-2 Petrels return to Salamone Field on Sunday when they
take on Maryville, another USA South opponent, at 2 p.m. Regional
games against Agnes Scott and Huntingdon, as well as a home game
with Toccoa Falls, are also on the docket before they start SAA
competition in early October.
