Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team scored two goals in the final 15 minutes on Thursday evening in Decatur, Ga., breaking open a 0-0 game and leading to a 2-0 victory.
The two teams played a tight first half at 0-0. The Petrels outshot the home-standing Scots 8-5 in the stanza, but Agnes Scott received three corner kicks to Oglethorpe's none. Agnes Scott also put four shots on goal to Oglethorpe's single shot, but Oglethorpe goalkeeper Sarah Craig came through in a big way, stopping all four and preserving the 0-0 tie.
The second half started like the first half, with neither team able to dent the scoreboard. But the Petrels finally broke through in the 78th minute. Freshman Beatrice Menjor tallied her third goal of the season and the Petrels had a 1-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, Oglethorpe doubled their lead and pretty much put the game away when sophomore Claire Stauber bagged her third goal of the season off an assist by senior Aubrie Provence. From there, the Stormy Petrels cruised home for the 2-0 victory.
With a second-half flurry, the Petrels wound up outshooting Agnes Scott 19-11, including 10-5 on goal. Agnes Scott won the corner kick battle, 7-4.
Stauber fired seven shots over the course of the game, five of them on goal.
The Petrels improve to 3-3 on the season with the victory. With SAA play looming, they will host Toccoa Falls next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. on Salamone Field. Then they'll go on the road to face Huntingdon before kicking off their conference schedule on Oct. 5.
