The Oglethorpe women's soccer team broke out in a big way Thursday evening at Salamone Field, blowing out cross-state rival LaGrange, 5-1, their first win of the season.

The Petrels fired 22 shots to the visiting Panthers' 11, including 11-7 in the shots-on-goal category.

Up 1-0 at halftime, the Petrels caught fire in the second half, outscoring the Panthers 4-1 over the course of the period. The fun started in the 56th minute, when freshman forward Beatrice Menjor knocked home a corner kick from senior defender Katie Muller.

Then, the Petrels probably put the game out of reach in the 59th, when senior forward Clara St. Urbain took a long pass from sophomore midfielder Emily Silva down the left side and finished past the LaGrange goalkeeper.

LaGrange brought the score back to within two, 3-1, in the 80th minute, but Oglethorpe put the game away in the 88th when junior forward Laura Betancourt volleyed home a cross from St. Urbain. Just for good measure, St. Urbain completed her hat trick less than a minute later when she went on a long run down the center of the field and beat the goalkeeper off the dribble before easily putting the ball into the empty net.

The game started off very well for the Petrels, as they took a 1-0 lead when senior forward Clara St. Urbain turned in a cross from freshman forward Beatrice Menjor in the 13th minute. After the goal, both teams had several clear-cut chances at goal, but neither was able to capitalize and the score was 1-0 at the break.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Craig tallied six saves on the day, including an incredible sequence in the first half where she saved three point-blank shots.

The 1-1 Petrels will quickly be back in action this weekend, when they take on Florida College at 5 p.m. Saturday from Salamone Field.
