Men's Basketball Beats Hendrix in Double OT Thriller, 70-69

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's basketball team defeated Hendrix in a double-overtime barn-burner Friday night in Conway, Ark., besting the home team, 70-69. The victory improves the team to 12-1 on the season, extending the best start in modern program history. It also improves the team's early-season SAA record to 2-0.

The Stormy Petrels had their largest lead of the game with 15:59 remaining in regulation, as they held a 34-24 edge over the home-standing Warriors. After a relatively close first half where neither team shot the ball well, the Petrels finally appeared to be starting to pull away.

However, things quickly turned the other direction on the visitors. They would not score again for a period of 7:50. During this time, Hendrix embarked on a 16-0 run to not only get back into the game, but take a 40-34 lead with 8:44 remaining.

The Petrels recovered with back-to-back 3-pointers from senior guard Tyler Courson, tying the game at 40-40 with 6:52 left in regulation. From there, the two sides traded points, with the Petrels mainly converting free-throw attempts to stay in the game. After Hendrix went ahead 46-43 with just under five minutes remaining, the Petrels scored seven straight, capped by a jumper from junior guard Alex Davis, to take a 50-46 lead with 43 seconds left. However, a 3-pointer put the Warriors back within one, and a layup with 11 seconds left in regulation tied the game, 51-51, and sent it into overtime.

In the first overtime period, the two teams traded baskets for the entire stanza, but the Petrels took a 2-point lead, 60-58, when sophomore forward Victor Rohlfs converted in the paint with 36 seconds remaining. However, Hendrix again came back and tied the game with 21 seconds left. The Petrels had a chance to win, but turned the ball over with three seconds remaining. The Warriors got a shot off to win themselves, but it wouldn't fall and the game advanced to double overtime.

In the second overtime period, the Petrels quickly fell behind, 62-60. Freshman guard Connor Smith buried a 3-pointer to give his side the lead back, 63-62, but consecutive baskets from the Warriors put them ahead by three, 66-63, with 3:34 remaining. A Davis jump shot got Oglethorpe back to within a point, though, and after a Hendrix free throw, sophomore guard Drew Patrick gave the Petrels the lead back with a 3-point shot, giving his team a 68-67 lead with 1:29 to play. After a Davis free throw, Hendrix tied the game again with 41 seconds left, and it looked as though the game might go to triple overtime. However, on the final possession of the game, Davis drew a foul with just a second left, giving him a chance to win the game at the free-throw line. He knocked down the first of his two free throws, and after missing the second, Hendrix was unable to get a good shot off, resulting in a hard-fought Petrel victory.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well in the game, as they both converted from the field at a 36 percent rate. The Petrels did knock down 44 percent of their 3-pointers while the Warriors only managed 16 percent. Hendrix outrebounded the Petrels, 54-45, outscored them on the fast break, 10-4, and outscored them off the bench, 21-5.

Rohlfs recorded a double-double, scoring 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds. He also contributed two steals and three blocks. Meanwhile, Davis led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He also grabbed eight rebounds, passed out six assists and recorded two blocks. Patrick added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Courson scored 11 points and shot 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.

The Petrels will conclude the weekend road trip when they travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Rhodes Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 4 p.m. Eastern time.
