Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team got three goals Sunday, two of them from junior forward Jessie Gregerson, to defeat home-standing Millsaps, 3-0, in Jackson, Miss., for their first SAA win of the season.
The Stormy Petrels began the game playing very well, as they fired 10 shots toward the Millsaps goal in the first half, putting two on target. The hard work paid off in the 32nd minute, when Gregerson finished a breakaway effort to give the Petrels a 1-0 advantage. They maintained the 1-0 lead through to haltime and continued taking it to the home-standing Majors in the second half.
Oglethorpe doubled their lead right away as junior forward Emily Silva found the back of the net in the 46th minute. She took a cross from freshman midfielder Caitlin Tabilog and fired a shot past the Millsaps goalkeeper from the top of the box, giving Oglethorpe a 2-0 lead.
The Petrels continued to attack the Millsaps goal and were again rewarded for their efforts, putting the game away with Gregerson's second goal in the 63rd minute. Junior forward Laura Betancourt got the assist on the play which gave the Petrels an insurmountable 3-0 advantage.
Gregerson's goals were her first two of the season, while Silva's was her first, as well. The assists were also the first of the campaign for Tabilog and Betancourt. Junior forward Jasmine Jakes fired seven shots on the afternoon, putting three on goal, while Gregerson took a total of four shots and also put three on target.
All three goalkeepers got action for the Petrels. Junior Sarah Craig stopped three shots while junior Bailey Evans turned back five. Between those two and junior Caitlin Hollis, the Petrels earned a team clean sheet on the afternoon.
For the game, the Petrels outshot Millsaps, 21-18. They also put nine shots on goal to Millsaps' eight.
The victory improves the Petrels to 4-8 on the season, 1-3 in SAA play. They'll return to Salamone Field for their final two home games of the season next weekend. They'll battle Rhodes at 1:30 p.m. on Friday before taking on Hendrix at noon on Sunday.
