The Oglethorpe women's tennis team continued playing tough matches against opponents who are ranked within the Atlantic South region, falling to regional No. 12 Christopher Newport 6-3 Tuesday morning.

The Stormy Petrels got an 8-5 win from the No. 1 doubles team of JaHaun Freeman-Clark and Katherine Walker and the No. 3 doubles team of Tricia Groover and Hailey Bowers was ahead late in their match. However, the Christopher Newport pair came back to beat Groover and Bowers, 8-6, and the Petrels lost the other doubles match to fall behind 2-1.

In the singles competition, Freeman-Clark stormed her opponent at No. 1, blowing her out 6-0, 6-0. Meanwhile, the No. 2 slot featured Caffrey Francis falling behind a set but building a 4-1 lead in the second before her opponent was forced to retire with an injury. This made the score of the dual match 3-2 in favor of the Stormy Petrels.

However, Nos. 3 and 4 featured three-set losses from Walker and Wilcox, who both got up a set but could not hold onto the lead. Groover get swept in the first set at No. 4, but came back to force a tiebreak in the second set. Unfortunately, she lost that tiebreak 7-3. Marcail McGranahan hung tough at No. 6 but lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

The Petrels fall to 1-4 on the season. They'll travel to Montgomery, Ala., to take on Huntingdon Thursday evening before returning home to battle high-powered Kenyon, currently ranked eighth in the Central region, on Sunday morning.
