The Oglethorpe women's tennis team put up a valiant fight against Birmingham-Southern, the 15th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region, but the home-standing Panthers proved to be just too strong in a 7-2 loss for the Stormy Petrels.
The Petrels had a chance to take both the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches, but lost both 8-6, putting them in a big 3-0 hole to start the dual match.
In the singles competition, the Petrels got victories from Caffrey Francis and Tricia Groover. Francis won a third-set super-tiebreak to take the match 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 at No. 2. Meanwhile, Groover took down her No. 5 match in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
Unfortunatley, Katherine Walker lost a super-tiebreak match of her own at No. 3, 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. Meanwhile, JaHaun Freeman-Clark fought very hard before falling 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1, while Marcail McGranahan lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 and Ingrid Wilcox lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.
The loss drops the Petrels to 3-12 on the year, 0-4 in SAA play. Their match against Millsaps in Jackson, Miss., on Sunday has been cancelled due to forecast storms, so they'll return to action mid-week when they take on Huntingdon at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday in Montgomery, Ala.
