Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team lost its first game of the year Sunday afternoon at the Jim 'n Nick's/PUMA Labor Day Classic in Birmingham, Ala., falling to Texas-Dallas, a team which received votes in the preseason coaches' poll, 3-0.
The Stormy Petrels fell behind early, going down 1-0 in the 18th minute of the game. That score held at halftime, but Texas-Dallas put the Petrels away in the second half, scoring in the 52nd and 70th minutes to secure the victory.
The Comets outshot the Petrels 15-11 over the course of the game, including 7-4 on goal. Senior forward Carlos Gaston led the team with three shots fired and was one of four Petrels to put a shot on target. The Petrels actually outshot Texas-Dallas 9-7 in the second half, but the Comets were able to finish two of their chances. The Petrels took eight corner kicks to UTD's five, including a 7-2 margin in the second half.
The 1-1 Petrels will go back on the road next weekend, this time to Virginia to take on a couple of South Atlantic regional foes. They'll play at Lynchburg 4 p.m. on Saturday and at Roanoke 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
