Box Score The Oglethorpe women's tennis team got its fall season off to an excellent start Wednesday evening with a 9-0 victory over junior college opponent Oxford on the Howell Tennis Courts.
The evening began with a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Eagles in doubles. Freshman Caroline Johnson and junior Katherine Walker took their No. 1 doubles match, 8-2, while the Stormy Petrels swept the No. 2 match with freshmen Emma Knapp and Halley Sickling, 8-0. The No. 3 doubles match went to senior Caffrey Francis and junior MaryAnne Hafen, returning from a year abroad, as they took their opponent down, 8-1.
In the singles portion of the competition, Walker took her No. 3 singles match, which was followed by Johnson clinching the dual match at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Francis was in a tough match at No. 1, but came through in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-4. Sickling and Hafen made quick work of their matches at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Sickling won 6-2, 6-1, while Hafen took her match 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Ingrid Wilcox played well at No. 4 singles, too, taking the match 6-2, 6-0.
Individuals on the squad will now get set for the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships next weekend across town at Emory.
