Men's Soccer Picks Up 2-1 Victory Over Hanover in Game 1 of BSC Invitational

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team improved to 3-3 on the season Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Hanover at the BSC Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. Statistically, the Petrels dominated the game from the outset and, despite seeing Hanover tie the game in the second half, they got the deserved win.

The Stormy Petrels outshot Hanover 19-7, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Petrels also took eight corner kicks to Hanover's three over the course of the game.

With Oglethorpe outshooting Hanover 9-4 in the first half, it didn't take long for them to take the lead. Freshman midfielder Angel Salome found the back of the net in the 13th minute off a feed from freshman forward Joe McGee. It was Salome's first career goal and McGee's first career assist.

Still just holding the 1-0 lead at halftime, however, the Petrels were vulnerable to an equalizer. Hanover got it in the 50th minute. However, the Petrels continued to throw attack after attack at the Hanover goal, outshooting their opponent 10-3 over the course of the second half. They got their reward in the 57th minute when McGee put the Petrels back ahead with his third goal of the season. Junior midfielder Nick Muntean picked up his first assist of the year on the play. From there, Oglethorpe was able to hold onto the lead and the victory.

The 3-3 Stormy Petrels will stay in Birmingham on Sunday to take on Greensboro in their second and final game of the BSC Invitational at 12:30 p.m. Eastern. The BSC Invitational is the second event hosted by Birmingham-Southern that the Petrels have participated in this season. They went 1-1 in the season's opening weekend at the Jim 'n Nick's/PUMA Labor Day Classic, beating Huntingdon and losing to nationally-ranked Texas-Dallas.
