Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team went ahead of Greensboro in the third minute Sunday morning at the BSC Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., and held on for the remaining 87 minutes, holding off Greensboro for a big 1-0 regional win.
In the third minute of the game, Oglehthorpe sophomore defender Justin Stoessel slammed home a very early opportunity, giving the Petrels the 1-0 lead. From there, Oglethorpe held on for the remainder of the half as Greensboro outshot them 6-1 over the course of the period, the goal representing the Stormy Petrels' lone shot.
The Petrels had much more control of the game in the second half, outshooting Greensboro, 9-5. Still, Greensboro held an 11-10 shot advantage over the course of the game. However, the Greensboro Pride had issues putting their shots on target. Oglethorpe put four shots on goal over the course of the contest to Greensboro's two. Sophomore goalkeeper Vaughn Moore was able to make crucial saves on both shots on goal, preserving the 1-0 lead and a clean sheet for himself, and the Stormy Petrels held on for the one-goal victory.
In addition to holding a shot advantage, the Pride also took eight corner kicks to Oglethorpe's seven. The Petrels committed 16 fouls to Greensboro's six, and were given four yellow cards to Greensboro's one.
Stoessel's goal came on his only shot of the game. Freshman forward Joe McGee took three shots, putting one on goal, while freshman midfielder Seth Prieto took two shots, also putting one on goal.
With the win, the Stormy Petrels improve to 4-3 over their difficult early-season schedule. They return to Georgia to take on Covenant Tuesday night at 7 p.m. on Lookout Mountain before returning to campus for their home opener against Elmhurst Saturday at noon.
