Women's Soccer Wins Lightning-Shortened Game, 2-1, Over Wesleyan

Box Score

MACON, Ga. - The Oglethorpe women's soccer team picked up a win in its first road game of the season Tuesday evening in Macon, Ga., defeating home-standing Wesleyan, 2-1, in a game that was called with just under 20 minutes left due to lightning in the area.

The Stormy Petrels dominated the run of play, outshooting the Wolves 32-4 over the course of the game, including 16-1 on goal. However, they had difficulty finishing, as the Wesleyan goalkeeper made 14 saves over the 70 minutes played. They were able to get the two goals they needed to claim victory, though, including a game-winner in the second half after Wesleyan had tied the game.

The opening goal came in the 17th minute when freshman midfielder Caitlin Tabilog took a long ball over the top from junior forward Claire Stauber, drove into the box, and made a move to elude a defender before finishing from 10 yards out for her first career goal. Stauber picked up her first assist of the season in the process.

Shortly before halftime, junior defender Katie Geiger was red-carded, reducing the Petrels to 10 players for the remainder of the game. Despite that, they held their 1-0 lead at halftime with a 19-1 shot advantage.

Seven minutes into the second half, Wesleyan equalized, but the Petrels were able to fight back and retake the lead in the 62nd minute when freshman forward AnnaBelle Geiger scored the first goal of her career off an assist from junior midfielder Ali Kight, her first of the season.

It turned out to be the game-winner, as nine minutes later, the game was suspended due to lightning in the area. With storms continuing to pop up, the game was eventually called and, as 70 minutes had elapsed, the result counted and Oglethorpe had its 2-1 victory.

The Petrels took four corners to Wesleyan's one. In addition, they were called offside 13 times to the Wolves' one.

The 2-1 Petrels will again take the field next Wednesday when they travel to Maryville, Tenn., to take on Maryville at 5 p.m.
