Women's Soccer Falls to Highly-Regarded Rhodes

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team faced a tough game against Rhodes Friday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee, falling to the homestanding Lynx 7-0. The result drops the Stormy Petrels to 2-9 on the season and 0-5 in SAA play.

The Petrels fell behind 3-0 early in the game, conceding goals in the fourth, 15th and 22nd minutes. Meanwhile, the Lynx laid siege to the Oglethorpe goal, firing 22 shots at senior Petrel goalkeeper Sarah Craig in the first half and putting 12 of them on target. Craig was able to make an impressive nine saves over the course of the period, but the Petrels were still down 3-0 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lynx continued to see the vast majority of the run-of-play. They scored again in the 50th minute to take a 4-0 lead and fired a total of 12 shots at the Petrel goal. Rhodes added three additional goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to reach the final margin.

Oglethorpe goalkeepers were able to combine for 10 saves over the course of the game, with senior Bailey Evans stopping a shot to go with Craig's nine, but Rhodes proved to be too much for the Petrels on the day.

"This was obviously not a great day for us," said Head Coach Alan Woods. "I was proud of Sarah for how she held up under the repeated pressure in the first half. She kept us in the game for as long as she could. She's a consummate professional in everything she does. At the end of the day, there's not much you can do about a game like that except assess what you can from it and move on to the next one. We'll look to put together a good performance against Hendrix on Sunday."

The Petrels will get right back on the field after this one as they continue their road trip. They'll next travel to Conway, Arkansas, to take on Hendrix Sunday at 1 p.m. Eastern time. The Warriors are 1-5 in conference entering the matchup, a game better than the Petrels in the standings.
