The Oglethorpe women's tennis team played a very competitive match against a tough Millsaps team Sunday afternoon, but the Stormy Petrels eventually fell 5-2 to the Majors at the Downing Howell Courts.
The Petrels were 1-2 in doubles play, keeping the team alive in the match going into singles play later in the afternoon. Freshman Caroline Johnson and junior Katherine Walker fell in a tough match to regionally-ranked doubles team Ashley Ford and Deena Li Kam Wa, 8-3. No. 2 doubles squad Marcail McGranahan and MaryAnne Hafen, a pair of juniors, fought hard in their match, getting to 7-5 before finally falling at the end. However, the Petrels got on the board with an 8-3 win from sophomore Ingrid Wilcox and freshman Halley Sickling at No. 3.
The singles matches posed a tough test for Oglethorpe. Caroline Johnson had a tough day against national No. 31 Deena Li Kam Wa, falling to the Majors' No. 1, 6-3, 6-0. Katherine Walker won the first set against Ashley Ford in the No. 2 spot, but lost the match 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. OU No. 3 Marcail McGranahan had a very solid day, defeating her opponent in three sets 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 10-6 in one of her best performances of the year. Halley Sickling played a tough match in the No. 6 spot, losing to Reya Hayek 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. The Nos. 4 and 5 matches went unfinished due to the late hour, leaving the final score as a 5-2 win for the Majors.
Head Coach Peter Howell spoke about Sunday's match: "This was a very intense college tennis match, and I was exceedingly proud of the way our girls fought. With the exception of No. 1 singles, we had chances in all five matches. They were all extremely close. McGranahan had a breakthrough that she can use to help her the rest of the season. We are continuing to get better."
The Petrels will be back in action against Piedmont this Tuesday on the Downing Howell Courts at 3:30 p.m.
