The Oglethorpe women's tennis team fell to Centre 5-1 on Sunday in a shortened match between the two conference rivals. The result concludes the regular season for the Stormy Petrels, who end the campaign at 6-14 heading into the SAA Tennis Championships in two weeks' time.
The Stormy Petrels put up a good fight in the doubles matches but only managed to come away with one win in the three contests. Normal No. 1 player Caroline Johnson was injured for the match, so the Petrels were forced to shift things around a bit. In the No. 1 doubles spot, juniors MaryAnne Hafen and Marcail McGranahan dropped their match 8-2. However, Oglethorpe bounced back with an 8-2 win for juniors Katherine Walker and Hailey Bowers. However, the Colonels took a 2-1 lead after a 9-7 victory over sophomore Ingrid Wilcox and freshman Halley Sickling.
The Petrels struggled in singles play, losing the three matches that were able to finish. Katherine Walker fell in the No. 1 spot with Johnson still hurt, losing to Centre No. 1 Aliza Williams 6-1, 6-0. McGranahan lost in the No. 2 position in a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to the Colonels No. 2. Ingrid Wilcox had a strong performance in her No. 3 match with Courtney Delong, but was defeated in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. The matches for Hafen, Sickling and Deanna Walls were left unfinished which left Centre with a 5-1 victory.
"We clearly were undermanned without No. 1 Caroline Johnson, but gave it a great effort," said Head Coach Peter Howell. "I was very pleased with the play of the new team of Walker and Bowers at No. 2 doubles. We just couldn't get the momentum fully on our side going into singles."
The Petrels now finish SAA play 0-7 and will hold the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament in Murfreesboro, Tenn., in two weeks. They'll take on the No. 1 seed, likely to be Sewanee, on Friday, April 24 in Murfreesboro.
