The Oglethorpe women's tennis team faced a difficult matchup Friday afternoon in the SAA quarterfinals, as they went up against top-seeded No. 12 Sewanee at Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Stormy Petrels hung tough but, in the end, fell to their nationally-ranked foes 5-0.
The Petrels got a very good showing from the No. 3 doubles team of freshman Halley Sickling and sophomore Ingrid Wilcox, as they hung tough against their highly-regarded Sewanee rivals but eventually fell 8-4. The No. 1 doubles team of freshman Caroline Johnson and junior Katherine Walker went up against the No. 10 doubles team in the nation and fell 8-0. Juniors MaryAnne Hafen and Marcail McGranahan fell 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, putting Oglethorpe down 3-0 headed into the singles competition.
In singles, the Tigers got a couple of 6-0, 6-0 victories over No. 4 Wilcox and No. 5 Hafen to clinch the match at 5-0, leaving the remainder of the matches unfinished. Johnson went up against the No. 15 singles player in the nation and was behind, but was beginning to assert herself a little bit more in her match. Walker played very well against the No. 33 team in the nation, putting up a competitive first set before losing 6-3. The second set went unfinished. McGranahan was down a set and 4-0 in the second when the dual match ended, and Sickling fell 6-1 in the first before having her match ended prematurely, as well.
"I was proud of how the girls competed today," said Head Coach Peter Howell. "Sewanee isn't ranked 12th in the nation for nothing. They have power up and down their lineup. We competed very well, I thought, at all nine positions, but Sewanee was just too strong. We'll look to end our season on a good note tomorrow."
The Petrels will take on fifth-seeded Centre in a consolation match Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern from Old Fort Park to end their season.
