The Oglethorpe women's soccer team fell to in-state rival Berry 3-0 in the SAA opener for both teams Monday afternoon at a damp Salamone Field. Two first-half goals proved too much to overcome for the Petrels and Berry held on in the second half. 

Berry jumped out to a two-goal lead early, getting two markers four minutes apart in the 19th and 23rd minutes. The visiting Vikings also outshot the Petrels by a 21-4 margin over the course of the period, including putting eight on goal to Oglethorpe's three. 

In the second half, the Vikings quickly put the game away with their third goal in the 46th minute. After that, the Petrels did settle down and control the game a bit better, though. Berry managed only eight shots in the second half and put four on goal. 

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Craig had her goal under siege for periods of the first half. She was able to keep her team in the game with six saves, many of them on difficult shots to stop. Fellow senior goalkeeper Bailey Evans played the second half and also played well, stopping three Berry shots over her 45 minutes of play. Senior forward Laura Betancourt fired two shots on the afternoon for the Petrels, putting one on target.

For the game, the Vikings outshot the Petrels 29-4, including 12-3 in shots on goal. Berry took six corner kicks to Oglethorpe's one and Petrel goalkeepers tallied nine saves to Berry's three. 

The Petrels will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Tennessee to take on Sewanee at 6 p.m. Eastern. After that, they'll return home to go up against Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps next weekend.
