Men's Lacrosse Falls to Huntingdon in Season's First Road Contest

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team hit the road on Wednesday evening, taking on Huntingdon in a chilly Montgomery, Alabama. The Stormy Petrels fell behind early and were never quite able to fight their way back, falling to the homestanding Hawks 19-6. The result dropped the Petrels to 0-2 on the young season.

Down 6-1 headed into the halftime break, the Hawks scored three straight to begin the half. Oglethorpe answered with a pair of goals in the period, as freshman midfielder Tyler Stridiron tallied his third goal of the season off an assist from sophomore attackman John Hood with 9:09 left in the quarter. Later in the period, freshman midfielder Nathaniel Gillespie scored his seventh goal of the season, but the visitors still trailed 14-3 headed into the fourth period.

In the fourth, Hood picked up a goal of his own just over four minutes into the quarter. Freshman midfielder Thomas O'Berry added his second marker of the game with 6:02 remaining in the quarter and Hood added his second of the game, as well, less than two minutes later off an assist from Gillespie. That cut Huntingdon's lead to 17-6. The Hawks were able to add a couple more at the end, though, to secure the 13-goal victory.

The home side got off to an excellent start, outscoring Oglethorpe 5-0 in the first quarter. The Petrels got the game back under control defensively in the second, allowing just a single goal with 2:33 remaining. O'Berry scored a goal of his own for the Petrels with 5:22 left in the quarter. It came as part of an extra-man opportunity and was his third goal of the season at the time and cut the Oglethorpe deficit to 5-1.

For the game, Hood wound up with a pair of goals and an assist while O'Berry tallied a pair and scooped three ground balls. Gillespie led the squad in ground balls with five while Hood led the way by putting five of his six shots on goal.

Altogether, Huntingdon outshot Oglethorpe 48-24, including 27-13 on goal, while taking 20 of the game's 29 faceoffs. The Hawks were also 3 for 3 on extra-man opportunities and 17 for 18 on clear attempts. The Petrels did improve in a couple facets from their game Saturday against Point. They committed 16 turnovers, almost half as many as Saturday, and committed just three penalties for two minutes.

"The guys fought hard," said Oglethorpe head coach Nathan Young. "We were sluggish in the first half, though, and you can't give a team like Huntingdon that much of a head start. We'll have to regroup and get ready for the next one. We're looking forward to coming back home on Saturday."

On Saturday, the Petrels welcome Methodist to the Oglethorpe Track and Field to start a 4-game homestand. Oglethorpe will take on the Monarchs at 1 p.m., then will welcome Piedmont, Greensboro, and SAA opponent Berry before spring break.
