Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team had a tough evening Wednesday at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, falling to Piedmont 16-1. The result drops the Stormy Petrels to 1-2 on the young season.
The Petrels found themselves down 11-1 at the half, but played solid defense in the second period. They held the visiting Lions to just five goals in the second half, but were unable to tally any of their own.
The lone Oglethorpe goal came from junior midfielder Juliana Altman with 1:28 left in the first half. She buried an unassisted goal to cut the Piedmont lead to 11-1 at the time.
The Petrels got 11 saves from freshman goalie Daniel Hoban on 27 shots-on-goal faced. Senior defender Morgan McGhee caused a pair of turnovers on the evening.
The Petrels were 6 of 12 on clear attempts for the night, turned the ball over 17 times to Piedmont's 10, were outdrawn 12-6, and committed 19 fouls to the Lions' 9. That latter mark was 15-2 at halftime.
"Piedmont is a talented team and we were challenged to play at a faster pace," said Oglethorpe head coach Marissa Giannerini. "Unfortunately, our inexperience held us back a little bit, I thought. As I mentioned, though, this was a good team that we faced tonight, so this gives us an excellent opportunity to get better and learn from this as we head into SAA play."
The Petrels will play their Southern Athletic Association opener Saturday afternoon, as they'll take on Sewanee at 1 p.m. After that, they'll hop back into non-conference play with a pair of home games next week against Huntingdon on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and against Ferrum on Saturday at 1 p.m.
