Men's Lacrosse Falls to Calvin after Tough Second Half

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team hung with the visiting Calvin Knights for much of the opening half and cut their deficit to three goals early in the third quarter Tuesday night at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, but Calvin pulled away in the second half, securing a 20-3 victory. The defeat drops the Stormy Petrels to 0-9 on the season.

In the first half, the Knights held the shorthanded Petrels to a single goal, but the Oglethorpe defense and freshman goalie Lane Edwards were up to the challenge for much of the opening two periods. They allowed just six goals over the course of the 30 minutes of play, three in each period. while Edwards came up with seven saves. The lone Oglethorpe goal came from freshman midfielder Nathaniel Gillespie off an assist from junior attackman Andrew Houghton. That tally came early in the first period, tying the score at 1-1 with 10:20 left.

The Petrels trailed 6-1 at halftime and tallied a couple goals to start the third period. Houghton buried a shot to begin the half and Gillespie followed off an assist from freshman midfielder Jorge Arce to make the score 6-3 with 12:37 remaining in the quarter. However, Calvin began pulling away from there. They finished the game on a run of 14 consecutive goals and pulled out the eventual 20-3 victory.

Gillespie led the team with a pair of goals on nine shots, putting five of them on target. Freshman middie Thomas O'Berry led the team with five ground balls on the night. Edwards finished with 13 total saves on the evening.

The Knights outshot the Petrels 48-18 over the course of the game, including 33-10 in shots on goal. Calvin took 14 of 26 faceoffs, as well.

"Shorthanded as we were, the guys hung in there throughout the first half and gave us a chance with the two goals to start the third quarter," said Oglethorpe head coach Nathan Young. "We just kind of ran out of gas there, though. We'll regroup and look to put ourselves in a competitive position headed into the bulk of the SAA season starting this weekend."

The Petrels will get the main portion of the SAA season underway on Saturday when they travel to Sewanee, Tennessee, to take on Sewanee at 2 p.m. Eastern. After that, they'll head west to take on Rhodes and Hendrix the following weekend.
