The Oglethorpe women's tennis team hung tough in a difficult matchup against national No. 4 Emory Saturday morning in Atlanta, and fell 9-0 to the top-ranked team in the Atlantic South region. The loss drops the Stormy Petrels to 6-5 on the season.
The morning started with the doubles competition, where the No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Caroline Johnson and junior Ingrid Wilcox hung tough, but fell to the top Emory doubles team 8-2. The No. 2 squad of freshman Shannon Cruz and sophomore Halley Sickling hung tough, as well, but fell 8-0, while the No. 3 doubles team of senior MaryAnne Hafen and freshman Delaney Abood fell 8-0 in their No. 3 doubles match.
In singles competition, Johnson fell to No. 18 Michelle Satterfield 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Cruz found herself in a very tough matchup with No. 3 Taylor Cosme. She fell 6-1, 6-0 in that match. Freshman Abood had to play No. 50 Melissa Goodman at No. 6, as well, falling 6-1, 6-0 in that. Wilcox fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Hafen dropped her No. 4 match 6-2, 6-0, and Sickling fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5.
"Despite the 9-0 score, the team competed very well," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "Emory isn't No. 4 in the nation for no reason, but we got beat because they played well and are an extremely talented team, not because we beat ourselves. We'll look to bounce back Wednesday afternoon."
The Petrels will next hit the courts on Wednesday afternoon, when they go against LaGrange at 3:30 p.m. from LaGrange, Georgia. After that, they'll host Berry in their SAA opener Friday at 2:30 p.m. on the Downing Howell Courts.
