Late Montevallo Rally Overtakes Women's Lacrosse, 13-10

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team held a 4-goal lead with about 20 minutes to go Wednesday evening against Division II Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama, but saw the homestanding Falcons bounce back with seven consecutive goals to take the game 13-10. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 3-7 on the season.

With the game tied 6-6 at halftime, the Petrels stormed out of the gates in the second, pouncing on the Falcons with four straight goals. Senior midfielder Tate Davis knocked home an unassisted goal mere seconds into the half, and that was followed by senior defender Morgan McGhee at the 27:26 mark, freshman midfielder Cassie Andrews off an assist from junior midfielder Juliana Altman with 26:13 left, and senior midfielder Sydney Sparks with 22:32 left, giving the Petrels a 10-6 advantage on the road.

Montevallo responded with their late flourish, though, turning the game around. They tied the score 10-10 with 6:27 left, then went ahead 11-10 with 5:36 remaining. The Falcons then scored an insurance goal at the 2:18 mark before putting the game away with 25 seconds left, pushing ahead 13-10.

The first half was a hotly-contested, back-and-forth 30 minutes. Montevallo took a 2-goal lead early then, after an answer from Altman, pushed their lead back out to 3-1 with 24:02 left in the half. The Petrels responded, though, netting back-to-back goals from Altman and freshman attacker Caroline Chamberlain to tie the score 3-3 just under eight minutes into the game. After the Falcons went back ahead by one, the Petrels tied it again on an unassisted Altman goal, then took their first lead of the game on a Sparks goal assisted by Altman with 16:28 in the period. The two teams went back and forth the rest of the half, with Altman scoring another goal with 9:50 remaining to give the visitors a 6-5 lead before Montevallo tied it before halftime.

Altman led the team in scoring once again, netting four goals and passing out a pair of assists on the evening. She put six of her seven shots on target. Freshman defender Bailey Turner led the squad with five ground balls while freshman goalie Daniel Hoban stopped 11 shots on the evening.

"This was a bit of a tough loss, because we were right in this game and had a chance to win it," said Oglethorpe head coach Marissa Giannerini. "We were very competitive against a Division II team, though, so that's a good sign moving forward into the rest of SAA play. We'll look to come back Saturday."

The Petrels take on Birmingham-Southern Saturday at 2 p.m. Eastern in Birmingham, Alabama. After that, they return home for Senior Day against Hendrix the following Saturday.
